EV Number Plates, Just a (Green) Flash in the Pan?
You've probably been driving along since restrictions have eased, and noticed a lot of cars with green number plates on the road. No, it's not the latest Brexit gimmick, it's in fact the new EV number plate!
Why do Electric vehicles need a special number plate?
Simple answer, they don't! Unlike some other countries around the globe, in the UK A green EV number plate is not yet mandatory for electric vehicles of any age. Adding the flash also does not take away from the vehicle in any way, but there are definitely strong reasons on why having the green flash on your battery powered motor can be beneficial.
What is the point in the green plate?
There are a few reasons why you might want to consider adopting the new EV plate style. Whether you've a new car or one that's a few years old, the benefits are applicable to all zero emissions full Electric Vehicles on the road! So firstly, that is what the plate lets people know, that your car is zero emissions and a FULL Electric Vehicle and therefore you can proudly show that you are playing your part towards a greener future. These have been brought in by the government to incentivise the move to zero emissions vehicles, with a plan for all-electric vehicles being the only type sold in the UK by 2035.

Bear in mind that, at this stage, any full EV number plate initiatives will be governed by local authorities, and therefore you will need to check what benefits are available close to you!
Is my vehicle eligible?
If your car is a zero-emissions full Electric Vehicle, the short answer is yes. Also, if your van, motorcycle, or bus is full electric, you’re also entitled to the new scheme! The small print says that this must be a vehicle powered only by a battery, with no petrol or diesel engine, meaning that the new plates are not available for hybrids or plug-in hybrids. Thankfully, this does not just count for new registrations or brand new vehicles, but any vehicle meeting the zero-emissions full electric criteria, so your 5 year old electric beauty can have the green flash retro-fitted!
